So we went to the doctor yesterday for another of the regular weekly check ups. I would never have though that it would take this many Dr visits, but I guess you can’t be too safe with the first pregnancy. (I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing–ohh, wait. I don’t!)
So we did the normal measurement of the belly and the “how’re you doing?” stuff, and then Catherine told the Dr. about the previous nite. She–we–were both up late pacing around the house because she was having some truly painful contractions. It got to the point that we actually started timing them, and yes it is too early for the baby to come.
So the Dr. gave us stern talking to about how we need to come in or at least call when that happens. I suppose we felt a little bad, but how were we to know. Whats normal? Nothing is normal in pregnancy if you ask me!
He felt it’d be a good idea to do a full ultrasound (this has been the 4-5th ultrasound we’ve had) to measure things and see whats up. Based on the ultrasound and measuring all the tiny parts he’s fairly certain that the baby is a bit big for her age. 6-6.5lbs so far at 34 weeks. I guess that is more like the baby is 36 weeks, but she’s only been in the oven 34 weeks.
He said this is somewhat normal for diabetic pregnancies. The higher sugars in the mother lead to a larger baby, but the potential problem comes in near the end when the baby gets too big for the belly, but isn’t fully ripe. We’re both hoping we can keep her in there another two weeks (plus, I’ll be out of town for work for two weeks!) so she can fully cook, but the Dr. said that if the baby decided to come next week she’d end up being fine, just spend a little time in the NICU.
I’m trying to get Catherine to take it easy in hopes that the baby’ll calm down in there and we can last another two weeks. When I get back from my next two classes (Houston and Vegas) it’ll be about time for the baby. It’s getting really real at this point. When I get back it’ll be time to be a Dad… ohh crap.

You make me laugh! Yes, it is really time to be a dad. You’ll be great.
Funny – “oh crap” . . . . and there will be plenty of it for the next couple of years – literally. Yummmm. It’ll be so fun! Woo-hoo! Bring on the crap! – and everything else that comes with it!
